Food banks and meal services

San Diego Food Bank is the county’s largest hunger-relief organization, distributing millions of pounds of food annually. December brings peak demand as families struggle with holiday expenses. Volunteers sort donations, pack food boxes, and assist with distribution events at locations throughout the county. Sign up through their volunteer portal.

Feeding San Diego operates similarly with warehouse sorting, food rescue programs, and distribution events. Both organizations welcome individuals, families, and corporate groups. Most shifts run 2-4 hours and require advance registration. Weekend and evening slots fill quickly during the holidays—book early.

St. Vincent de Paul Village serves meals to San Diego’s homeless population year-round, with special holiday meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Volunteers help with meal prep, serving, and cleanup. The downtown location makes this accessible via public transit. Groups of 5+ should coordinate in advance.

Toy and gift drives

Toys for Tots, coordinated by the Marine Corps Reserve, collects and distributes new unwrapped toys to children in need. Drop-off boxes appear at businesses, community centers, and holiday events throughout November and December. The program also needs volunteers for warehouse sorting and distribution events in mid-December. Find drop-off locations and volunteer opportunities.

The Salvation Army operates Angel Tree programs where community members “adopt” children or families for gift giving. Cards with age and gift preferences hang on trees at participating retailers and community centers. Purchase gifts, attach the card, and return by the deadline. This program allows direct impact—you choose specific children to support.

Many churches and community organizations run similar adopt-a-family programs in December. Check with local faith communities, Boys & Girls Clubs, and family service agencies for opportunities.

Shelter and housing support

Father Joe’s Villages provides comprehensive services to San Diego’s homeless population. Holiday volunteer needs include serving meals, organizing donations, and assisting with special events. The organization welcomes both one-time holiday volunteers and those interested in ongoing commitments.

Interfaith Community Services serves North County (Oceanside, Carlsbad, Escondido, Vista) with emergency shelter, food programs, and family services. December brings toy distribution events, holiday meal programs, and donation sorting. Volunteers can serve at their main facility or at satellite locations throughout North County. Check their volunteer calendar.

Animal welfare

San Diego Humane Society locations in San Diego, Escondido, and Oceanside need extra help during the holidays. Volunteers walk dogs, socialize cats, assist with adoption events, and help with facility maintenance. The holiday season sees increased animal intakes as families face housing instability. Training is required before volunteering—plan ahead if interested.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas also coordinates holiday programs including pet food drives for families struggling to feed their animals. See our guide to Christmas with dogs for more pet-friendly holiday activities.

Senior services

Many seniors face isolation during the holidays. Meals on Wheels San Diego delivers not just food but also human connection to homebound seniors. Holiday route coverage is especially needed when regular volunteers travel. Routes typically take 2-3 hours and provide an opportunity to brighten someone’s day with brief friendly visits.

Senior centers and assisted living facilities often host holiday parties and welcome volunteers to help with activities, serve refreshments, or simply visit with residents. Contact facilities directly to inquire about holiday volunteer opportunities.

Environmental and community projects

I Love A Clean San Diego organizes creek cleanups, beach cleanups, and community beautification projects year-round including during the holidays. These hands-on outdoor projects work well for families and groups looking to volunteer together.

Coastal Roots Farm in Encinitas hosts volunteer days for gleaning produce donated to local food banks. December gleaning helps stock pantries during high-need months. The farm welcomes families and provides meaningful outdoor volunteer work. See our North County guide for more area activities.

How to get started

Most organizations require advance registration for holiday volunteer shifts. Popular opportunities (serving Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, toy distribution events) fill weeks in advance. Register early and have backup options if your first choices are full.

Many organizations require volunteer orientations or background checks before placement. If you’re new to volunteering, start this process in early November to be cleared for December opportunities. Some organizations offer expedited holiday volunteer programs for those unable to complete full training.

Corporate and group volunteering requires additional coordination. Contact organizations directly to arrange group projects—most have dedicated volunteer coordinators for corporate partnerships.

If schedule constraints prevent in-person volunteering, monetary donations or virtual volunteering (remote data entry, social media support) help organizations during their busiest season. Many charities face year-end fundraising goals—December donations make significant impact.

Year Round Makes The World Go Round

Many volunteer services get flooded with good intentioned citizens whose hearts grow three sizes larger once a peppermint latte hits their lips. This is great! But remember that communities rely on selfless support all year long, often desperately so. Spread your generosity across all the seasons!
